Really About
For years I struggled with the
question, "Who am I?" I even went on a bicycle trip by myself when I
was 22 years old because I needed direction in my life. At the time, I
was a Photography and Filmmaking student at Ryerson Univesity in
Toronto.
Right now, we think life is spiralling out of control. But, when I look
back over the years, I can see that there have been crises all along
that challenged our ability to cope.
When I went on my bicycle trip, I hoped that by bicycling through
Canada's Maritime Provinces the pace of my life would slow down and I
would get in touch with what life was really about. I also hoped to get
confirmation that I was pursuing the right career.
You know how it is. Sometimes you think you're doing something because
of one reason but it's really about something else. That's how it was
with my bicycle trip because I ended up confronting not only "Who am
I?" but also "Who am I really?"
I wanted to find out, "What am I doing here?" I discovered, "What am I really doing here?" It was during
my bicycle trip that I had two experiences that I believe opened me
psychically. I write about them in When
We Were Gods.
These were the experiences that set me on my present path. I remember
feeling as if a compass had turned within me and now I was set in the
right direction. But I didn't know what that was. Only that I was now
on the right path. It has taken the rest of my life to consciously
connect with the answers to those questions we all ask ourselves:
- Who am I? Who am I really?
- What am I doing here? What am I really
doing here?
- Where am I going? Where am I really going?
That's
what When
We Were Gods is about
- the answers to these questions.
Therefore, even though it appears that everything started when I dreamt
about a stranger I would marry and then saw the man in real life the
next day (described in the first chapter of When We Were Gods), everything
really started with the desire to make sense of an
insane world when I went on my bicycle trip many years ago. And even
though it appears
that the answers started to come after I was married to the "man of my
dreams" and went to a hypnotherapist for weight control, it actually
started many years earlier, alone, with my bicycle, in a tent,
beside a river in New Brunswick, when I awoke in the middle of the
night and it seemed like the sky was falling.
